About the AES Filing. (Automated Export System)
The Automated Export System (AES) is the primary instrument used by the U.S. Census Bureau to collect data on U.S. exports, which becomes part of the statistics used to compile the U.S. position on merchandise trade. By reporting your exports to AES, your information is included in the economic indicators and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of our nation’s economy.

In addition, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) uses the data to ensure compliance with U.S. export regulations so that our country’s exports do not fall into the hands of unauthorized parties that may harm the homeland or U.S. interests abroad.

Timeline to file with CBP
The AES Filing is required to be filed 72 hours or more in advance for Vehicle Exports. Generally it is recommended to start the filing 4-5 days in advance if you are using a third party to help you file the AES as the preparer may need 1-2 days to work and receive the information for your export. For basic goods exporting via ocean vessel, 24 hours is required prior to loading cargo onto the vessel.
Who is allowed to file the AES?
Primarily the Exporter also known as (USPPI) is responsible to ensure it is submitted to CBP no later than 72 hours before goods are loaded onto the vessel or leaving the United States, or for vehicle exports crossing the border. Several parties are authorized by CBP who can file the AES as long as they have permission from the USPPI.
